Rep. Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) introduced the bipartisan “Save Children from Trauma Act” on Wednesday, June 14th.
The bill reauthorizes Section 7133 of the SUPPORT Act. This section provides resources for the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative, which helps improve treatment and services for children, adolescents, and families who have experienced traumatic events. The bill reauthorizes the program at the last enacted appropriated level of $93,887,000 for fiscal years 2024-2028.
“The fentanyl crisis and increasing violence across the United States don’t just impact adults,” De La Cruz said. “These issues negatively impact our children who suffer trauma now and may have lasting trauma in the future. I am proud to introduce the Save Children from Trauma Act of 2023. This bipartisan legislation provides the resources necessary for children to get the help necessary to address adolescent trauma so they can recover and become healthy, productive adults.”
The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH), who issued the following statement:
“The amount of trauma that way too many of our children are dealing with right now is an absolute crisis. We can do so much more for our children, and this bill will help. Groups in Cincinnati, like the Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children, have stepped up and have to help grow our network of community-based mental health providers to ensure every child gets the support and treatment they need.”
