The Mexican government has issued the following press release:
The Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defense are coordinating a series of flights to repatriate the bodies of those who died in late June in a tractor-trailer in the San Antonio, Texas metropolitan area.
The Mexican consulate there has been in ongoing communication with the families involved and has accompanied the three hospitalized Mexicans, one of whom has recovered and is in his home in the United States.
In accordance with the wishes of the families, the Mexican government will repatriate 25 of the 26 deceased Mexicans and will cover all expenses to their places of origin.
The Mexican Air Force CASA C-295 can carry eight coffins and crew, so at least three flights are planned. Two trips will be made today to repatriate a total of 16 bodies.
The first flight repatriated the remains of Gustavo “N” from the State of Mexico; María “M” and Omar “R” from Guanajuato; Jozue “D” from Oaxaca; Marcial “T” from Querétaro; and Jair "V", Yovani "V" and Misael "O" from Veracruz.
The flight departed San Antonio, Texas and landed at the Toluca International Airport, where Mexican immigration officials began the transfer of the bodies to their places of origin so that their families can provide them with a dignified burial as soon as possible.
The second flight will repatriate the remains of Juan “T” from the State of Mexico; Efraín “F” and José “N” from Guanajuato; Javier “F” and Mariano “S” from Oaxaca; and Francisco "D", Mayra "B" and Fernando "G" from Zacatecas.
The Government of Mexico conveys its condolences for the loss of these Mexican citizens and reiterates its support and accompaniment for Mexicans abroad.
