Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz has introduced the Improving Medicare Services Act of 2024, a bipartisan effort aimed at enhancing the 1-800-Medicare call line. The legislation, co-led by Congressman Lou Correa, seeks to ensure seniors receive necessary healthcare assistance by modernizing this critical resource for Medicare beneficiaries.

The bill mandates a comprehensive study by the Comptroller General of the United States to evaluate the call line's performance. This includes analyzing customer wait times, satisfaction levels, staffing competency, and contractor performance. Recommendations will be provided to Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services based on these findings. This marks the first Government Accountability Office study on the 1-800-Medicare line in over 15 years.

"Seniors rely on the 1-800-Medicare call line for essential information and assistance regarding their healthcare coverage," stated Congresswoman De La Cruz. "We must ensure that this service is meeting their needs efficiently and effectively."

The study will also review actions taken by the Secretary of Health and Human Services or contractors in response to previous GAO recommendations.

"Our seniors here in Orange County and across the country deserve meaningful access to the health care they’ve earned and deserve," said Congressman Correa. "They shouldn’t be forced to wait countless hours for answers."

Original cosponsors include Representatives Troy Nehls and Brandon Williams.
