There were 69 American Indian students enrolled in Comal ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 3% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Comal ISD schools welcomed 28,511 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.2% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Comal ISD roughly covers schools within Comal County and has a main office in New Braunfels.

Among the 35 schools in Comal ISD schools, Smithson Valley High School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of nine students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
