Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) has introduced the Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing the inconsistent treatment of disabled veterans seeking housing assistance. The bill seeks to rectify the unjust disqualification of veterans receiving disability income through the Department of Veterans Affairs from certain HUD programs. This issue has been highlighted during Financial Services Committee hearings.

In a statement, Congresswoman De La Cruz emphasized the importance of the bill, stating, "Our disabled veterans have sacrificed immeasurably for our nation, and it is unconscionable that bureaucratic red tape would prevent them from accessing the housing support they need and deserve." The legislation includes key measures such as the exclusion of service-connected disability compensation when determining eligibility for housing assistance and a requirement for a congressional report to examine how such compensation is treated across all HUD programs.

Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32), a co-lead of the bill, expressed his support, saying, "There is nothing more shameful than a homeless disabled veteran that lost a limb defending us, and is now on the streets." Sherman looks forward to working with Congresswoman De La Cruz to ensure that veteran disability benefits are excluded from income calculations for HUD programs.

The Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act is also co-led by Reps. Susan Wild (PA-07) and Mike Lawler (NY-17), with several other representatives serving as co-sponsors. The bipartisan support for the bill reflects a collective effort to provide disabled veterans with the housing support they need and deserve.
