City of New Braunfels issued the following announcement on Oct. 28.
The New Braunfels Public Library’s Children’s Room will be unavailable to the public from 12pm Monday, Nov. 2, through 12pm Wednesday, Nov. 4, in order for the room to be used as a polling location on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
“Libraries are a cornerstone of civic engagement,” said Library Director Gretchen Pruett. “We’re non-partisan, we’re open to everyone in the community, we provide access to information and resources—libraries are very much still viewed as a trustworthy institution. If we can serve as a polling location, we will—even under circumstances as unusual as a pandemic.”
In a typical election year, voting would take place in the library’s meeting room. However, due to COVID-19, returned library materials are quarantined for 72 hours before returning to the shelves and the meeting room has been repurposed to hold those quarantined materials, which can exceed 1,000 items at any given time.
In order to provide time for the set up and take down of voting equipment, the Children’s Room will shut down at noon on Monday, Nov. 2 and will reopen at noon on Wednesday, Nov, 4. Regular library patrons will not be allowed in the Children’s Room during this time and library staff will not be able to pull children’s materials on hold or fulfill book bundle requests from the time the equipment is set up until it is taken down.
The New Braunfels Public Library is located at 700 East Common St. The Westside Community Center, located at 2932 S IH Frontage Rd., will also be a polling location on Election Day.
