City of Garden Ridge issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
The Garden Ridge Police Department (GRPD) provides free of charge house checks while you are temporarily out of town. To sign up for house checks visit the House Checks for Residents link under the Police Department on the City website (https://www.ci.garden-ridge.tx.us/.../House-Checks-for...). Please note that the GRPD assumes no liability for any thefts, losses, or damages to the property.
Some safety tips to help safeguard your property while you are out of town:
1) Stop your mail service during your time away or make arrangements to have it collected. You can pick up a form to hold mail from any post office.
2) Stop newspaper services or package deliveries. The accumulation of deliveries is an alert to burglars that a house is unattended.
3) Inspect all door and window locks to ensure they are in proper working order.
4) Install window locks or dowels for sliding glass doors.
5) Use timers for lights inside and outside your home.
6) If any vehicles remain on the property, ensure all the doors and windows are locked. Note any damage to them before you leave.
7) If you keep garage door openers in your vehicles, remove them.
8) Make arrangements for an emergency contact.
