Comal County and its county seat, New Braunfels, saw their unemployment rates drop in May as the state gradually reopened.
Texas Workforce Commission figures released in mid-June show that New Braunfels' unemployment rate slid from 13.4% in April to 12.4% in May. Comal County’s unemployment rate of 11.2% in May was 0.7% lower than in April.
The county also saw the number of new unemployment claims continue to decline between May and June.
Texas’ unemployment rate is a little above 13%. Normally among the few states with an impressive lower rate, Texas was slammed by the coronavirus.
TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel said his office continues to be steadfast in its commitment to aid Texans' return to work, the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung reported.
The state went on a multi-phase reopening plan after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted a stay-at-home order at the end of April. A record rise in cases, however, has prompted state officials to hit the pause button.
