CITY OF NEW BRAUNFELS: Arson Investigation

Firesafetytraining

City of New Braunfels issued the following announcement on June 17.

On 6-17 at approximately 5:50am, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department were called to the New Braunfels Public Library,

located in the 700 block of East Common St., for reports of a fire in front of the building.

Officers and firefighters arrived to find that three trash cans in the front of the library had been intentionally set on fire (two along the curbside of the library’s horseshoe driveway and one underneath the building’s front awning).  Fire Department personnel quickly extinguished the fires and the New Braunfels Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to begin an investigation.  Damage estimates are at $500 or less, to include the three trashcans along with minor damage to a nearby wooden bench.  There were no damages to the library building itself.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing by the New Braunfels Fire Marshal’s Office.  Although investigators are not ruling out the possibility that this incident might be connected to the previous vandalism incident at the library, the initial results of the investigation indicate that the incidents are not connected.

“We are certainly disappointed that the library has had to deal with two recent incidents of vandalism, but our focus remains on providing access to a world of literacy and learning resources to the citizens of New Braunfels,” said Gretchen Pruett, Director of the New Braunfels Public Library.  “This incident had no effect on library operations, and we are open as usual today.”
