A Hill Country county is not immune to the statewide surge in property values.
Values in Comal County have jumped as high as 20% with no relief in sight, according to The Herald-Zeitung.
Residents have asked the Comal County Commissioners Court to intervene. Bob Wolf, of New Braunfels, and others requested the commissioners to approve a resolution asking Gov. Greg Abbott to freeze property values at the 2019 levels in response to the economic fallout brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to CAD chief appraiser Rufino Lozano, "the coronavirus caused a delay in the mailings of notices."
“Everyone in the county whose values dropped by even a dollar received a notice,” Lozano told The Herald Zeitung. “Several local taxing jurisdictions grant local option exemptions based on a percentage of value, so if their valuations fluctuate or go down, so will the local option exemption amount."
