As the City of New Braunfels works toward reinstating its curbside Green Waste program, Comal County is offering a temporary option for residents.  Beginning May 1st through Saturday, May 16th, New Braunfels residents can take their Green Waste bags (which would normally be put at the curb) to 281 Resource Drive for free. Comal County has dropped the fee during this time for Green Waste in paper kraft bags only.  Fees will still apply to loose brush and branches.

Bags brought for drop-off must be prepared as required by the City’s Green Waste program, which is for branches, leaves, and grass clippings. No trash, metal, food, or single-stream recyclables are permitted in Green Waste bags. Details on the City’s Green Waste program should be reviewed at www.nbtexas.org/greenwaste.  Bags brought to the County must be transported either in a car, a truck bed, or a trailer no larger than 8ft by 4ft.  Larger trailers or those bringing numerous bags may be subject to regular fees.  Comal County’s facility is open from 7am to 3pm Tuesday through Friday, and 8am to 12pm on Saturday. Residents are required to show their state-issued identification at the site for residency verification.

The City temporarily suspended Green Waste curbside collection at the beginning of April as an increased safety precaution and to ensure there were sufficient drivers for collection of weekly garbage and recycling services.  The Solid Waste and Recycling Division (SWRD) has been tracking the increase in residential waste and recycling during the recent stay at home orders, which shows residential garbage tonnage has increased 22% and residential recycling has increased 19%.  SWRD will continue to monitor the trend in tonnage with the unfolding of the Governor’s Open Texas plan.  As residential collection volumes decrease, Green Waste collection will be able to resume.  The City anticipates restarting Green Waste collection by the end of May.
