The Comal County Commissioners Court has accepted a bid for a new storage solution for the county’s maps.
According to Community Impact, Comal County’s 6,062 plats — hard copies of maps serving as the records of property lines within the county — have long been in need of a new storage system as their current system required too much room and was not serving as adequate protection.
In a Feb. 20 meeting, the Comal County Commissioners Court approved funding for the new storage solution, which will be delivered by Kofile Technologies.
Kofile has quoted the county a price of $178,601. This includes custom cabinetry, as well as conservation treatments, de-acidification of documents, and repair of the documents on an as-needed basis.
In addition to helping to preserve the plats for many years to come, a massive benefit of the new storage solution is the reduced amount of space that will be required to store them. County Clerk Bobbie Koepp, who has been in her role since 2014, is excited about the prospect of enhanced and efficient storage of these documents.
In addition to the plat storage system, the county also approved another bid from Kofile for $456,160 in February for the preservation of archive deeds, Commissioners Court minutes, probate records and plats.
The bid from Kofile estimated there will be nearly 70,000 pages processed for that preservation project.
Founded in 1846, Comal County is located on the Edwards Plateau in Texas and had over 100,000 residents based on information from the 2010 census.
