City of New Braunfels issued the following announcement on March 12
It is time for the 8th Annual Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Clean-Up Event. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 4th from 9 a.m.-noon.
The clean-up is coordinated by the Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Partnership as part of the Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Protection Plan.
“As a volunteer, you can help protect Geronimo and Alligator Creeks by collecting trash from several target areas that drain to the creeks,” said Mark Enders, the City of New Braunfels’ Watershed Program Manager. “Geronimo and Alligator Creeks are tributaries to the Guadalupe River. Alligator Creek begins on the north side of New Braunfels and flows behind the Town Center at Creekside shopping center and adjacent to the City of New Braunfels’ Airport.”
Volunteers can register on-line at http://geronimocreek.org/ by clicking on the online registration link under the Clean Up announcement, and then selecting one of the three clean-up base locations:
--New Braunfels Regional Airport at the corner of Airport Road and Entrance Drive.
--Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center, 1865 US Hwy 90 East, Seguin.
--Navarro High School parking lot, 6450 N. State Highway 123, Seguin.
Volunteers should arrive at 9 a.m. at their selected location to receive breakfast tacos, special event T-shirts, safety instructions and supplies. While there, volunteers will obtain further directions to local areas needing trash pickup.
“If you have your own gloves or pick-up tools, bring them and dress appropriately for the weather,” Enders said. “Trash bags and a limited supply of gloves and pick-up tools will be available.”
The sponsors for the event currently include: Alamo Group, Commissioner Drew Engelke, Ehler’s Tree Farm, Geronimo General Store, Heinemeyer Farms, Guadalupe County Groundwater Conservation District, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center, Niagara Bottling, Vitesco, Waste Connections, and the City of New Braunfels. The City of New Braunfels and Waste Connections are donating large disposal containers to collect the trash and providing disposal free of charge.
The Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Protection Plan was developed by local stakeholders after water quality monitoring data showed elevated concentrations of bacteria and nitrogen in the creeks. The plan outlines strategies to restore and protect water quality in the creeks. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and more information is available at http://www.geronimocreek.org/.
Funding for this effort is provided through a federal Clean Water Act §319(h) Nonpoint Source Grant administered by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
