SAN ANTONIO – On October 19, City Council voted to approve an ordinance requiring places of public accommodation to post signage with domestic violence resources. Councilman Pelaez filed a Council Consideration Request in October 2021 to address the gap in resources for those who have experienced the devastating effects of domestic abuse. Following the vote, the Councilman issued the following statement:
“Domestic violence is at epidemic levels in our community. One in three women in San Antonio have or will have a domestic violence story to tell. Too often, survivors and family members of victims tell us they don’t know of help available. The ordinance approved today ensures San Antonio’s most vulnerable have access to the resources that could save their lives.”
Under the provisions of this ordinance, signage displaying domestic violence prevention and intervention resources in both English and Spanish will be placed on mirrors in restrooms. The primary objective guiding the implementation of this ordinance is to educate and collaborate with businesses and public establishments to ensure compliance. This ordinance applies to any places of public accommodation within the city. The City of San Antonio Metro Health District (Metro Health) will develop and provide the required sign at no cost to the participating establishments. Over a 12-month implementation period, a comprehensive education and distribution campaign will be executed to inform the community about the ordinance. Metro Health will ensure extensive outreach and promotion to provide establishments with ample time for understanding and staff training.
The approval of this ordinance reflects the city’s dedication to addressing the pressing issue of domestic violence within our community and marks a significant step towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for those affected by domestic violence in our city. Councilman Manny Pelaez and the entire City Council are committed to fostering a community that stands united against domestic violence and that ensures immediate access to critical resources for those who need it most.
